Learning outcomes 

  • Understand concepts such as information and communications technology (ICT) and the importance of computers in today's society

  • Learn about hardware components and be able to connect them and switch on and shut down the personal computer (PC)

  • Mouse and keyboard basics

  • Understand hierarchical folder structures

  • Learn how to create a folder and save and locate documents

Overview

This unit has five sections:

Preparation

Ensure that all of the computers are on, and at the log-in page

Ensure that short-cuts to OpenOffice Writer, Calc, Impress and Draw are on the desktop

Prepare a piece of paper for each learner with their login and password information

Groups of learners assemble PCs and switch them on and shut them down

Learners are instructed to log onto the computers, using their log-in names and passwords

Requirements

  • Black or white board or large flip chart

  • Thick client PCs that have been dis-assembled (preferably one for every five learners)

  • Users have been loaded onto system (see technical manual)
