Changes

You had put light to our black minds
You had put a glittering future to our bleak future
You had made us firm and strong
to our flimsy and frail deeds.

You had shaved off our pessimism
And put in optimism.
I'm still asking myself why us?
Why coming to Khayelitsha?
Not going to Rondebosch every Saturday morning
And teaching people who are more clever than us
People who have a brighter future than ours.

Why, why us?
Before your arrival it was a night without stars
A day without sun
A road without end
And a journey with no destination
In our minds.

But now it's a sea with its fishes
A tree with its leaves
And houses with their roofs
I used to think education was for
People who have money.

I used to be like 2Pac saying
"I see no changes".

But now I see them
because of the bond between us learners

The bond bewteen you as tutors
And at last but not least
the bond between Black and White.
