Six well-known poets from Durban and surrounding areas gathered in Mayville Secondary School to facilitate creative writing workshops on the 26th of April 2008. The focus of the workshop was on getting the learners of Ikamva youth org to write poetry. The program of the day included topic such as: What is poetry? Who can write a poem? How does one get to write a poem? And the last part of it (which most learners found it interesting) was where the facilitators gave them the opportunity to write their own pieces. All facilitators were so impressed by the standard at which those learners do their thing, as Zamo (one of the facilitators) commented “Yoh! These learners can write man…I came here to teach them poetry but it ended up being them who taught me a lot.” On the side of learners also, they greatly enjoyed the day and came up with a proposal that the Mayville writing club be established which will be an ongoing thing and indeed the establishment of the club the learners requested is under plan. Sooner then soon the club will be launched and start operating. The main aim of this club will be to provide a platform where young people are able to share their thoughts and ideas, communicate their frustrations and pains, aspirations and life resolutions; expressing themselves on paper or through the spoken word.We also looking forwad to have a perfomance evining whereby the learners will perfom what they wrote during the workshop. Thanks to everyone who made this day a great success, facilitators namely: Thulani Myeza, Zamo Ntshangase, Veli Ndaba, Sphamandla Xaba and Nduduzo Ngcobo. Also thanks to learners for their co-operation and active participation. Julia how can you be forgotten.
