Careers Indaba in Khayelitsha on 4 July - Get involved!

Submitted by Joy Olivier on Thu, 2009-06-18 13:37.

Saturday the 4th of July will see a gathering of some of South Africa’s top universities, colleges, companies and educational bodies at the Nazeema Isaacs Library in Khayelitsha. The day will provide an opportunity for IkamvaYouth’s learners, volunteers (most of whom are university students) and the wider Khayelitsha community to gain insight into and understanding of post-school career and study opportunities.

“Our vision for this Indaba is to inform and inspire these talented and committed young people about how to achieve their career dreams,” says Luyanda Kota, Director of IkamvaYouth Western Cape. “We’re grateful to the organisations for spending this day with us. This personal interaction will give our learners the chance to discover what it really takes to have a career in their field of interest and better insights on where to study.”

The Careers Indaba is being held at the Nazeema Isaacs Library in Makhaza and is open to all learners in Khayelitsha. The Indaba will start at 10.30am and will run until 3.30pm, with a series of talks about careers in different fields, from accounting, photography and engineering to teaching. There will be a number of exhibitors too. The day has been structured to give learners much-needed time to interact with the organisations, in a familiar and informal setting.

The Indaba forms part of IkamvaYouth’s winter holiday programmes, which will be held at TSiBA education and the Masiphumelele library. The programmes provide learners with tutoring, career guidance, mentoring, computer literacy training and a range of workshops – from creative writing and photography to entrepreneurship and science experiments. The programmes are an integral part of IkamvaYouth’s intensive programme which enables learners to excel in their exams and access post-school opportunities.

“We’re planning for this Indaba to be the first of many,” says Kota. “We believe in constantly finding new ways to enhance the learning experience for these students. We need to be investing in them, as the leaders who will be contributing to our country’s future."

Everyone is welcome to join us on the day! Please find the full programme for the day's activities here
