Parents Day in Makhaza

On the 23rd of May we hosted a Parents meeting for our ikamva learners at the Chris Hani High School nearby our offices. The parents meeting was very well attended - we had 50 parents in attendance! Luyanda Kota welcomed the parents and gave them background information about what we do. He also shared the details about what we intend to do during the holiday programme and more generally motivated the parents to engage in their children's education. Ex-learners and volunteers were also in attendance and shared their stories with the parents.

Parents were also offered the opportunity to speak and many parents shared their positive stories about their child's experiences

The mother of Sivenathi Plaatjie (IY Grade 11), Zolisa Gqosha said the following:"It’s the first time having a child here at IkamvaYouth and she wishes that she knew about it from the beginning as she would have sent her child there sooner. She noted that her child is now used to being busy with school work. She also expressed that she had initially been worried that her child may be going to see the boys but now trusted that she is coming at IY. She is happy that her child will be knowledgeable with bursaries."

Siphokazi Minikina’s mother said the following: "It’s her first time having a child here at IY and that she hadnt initially understood what IkamvaYouth was. She said that her child was bought a computer by her father and was amazed that she knows so well how to use it and never asks for assistance. She also shared that she has seen Siphokazi’s report and she is doing so well at school."

One mother expressed interest in us increasing our services to include learners at younger grades, highlighting once again the need for us to increase our services to more learners due to the high demand.
