A township-based volunteer programme that gets learners out of poverty and into university has once again shown that by-youth for-youth transformation is possible, despite all odds. It has been a difficult year for matrics across the country -- key challenges IkamvaYouth faced last year include grappling with the new curriculum and learners' low levels of literacy and numeracy. However, the hard work by ikamvanites (volunteers and learners) at IkamvaYouth's branch in Khayelitsha has once again paid off.
IkamvaYouth is happy to have received a high quality and cost effective photocopy machine from Panasonic and we want to thank Panasonic and Pan Solutions for generously sponsoring us with the machine.
On the 29th of November 2008 Ikamvanites (Volunteers and Learners) gathered around Chris Hani High School as they were looking forward to yet another Prize Giving event.
Through Our Eyes, Ikamvanites' book of photography and poetry has just been released! The photographs and poems showcase some of IkamvaYouth's best creative talent, and provide unique windows into the lives of South African township youth. Nick Fitt, with the help of many other ikamvanites, compiled some of the photographic and poetic talent into this beautiful book. Preview the first 15 pages of the book here. Order your copy now, and support IkamvaYouth (half of the book price goes directly to the organisation). Your contribution will help us to continue offering our programmes and services to the youth and wider communities of Khayelitsha, Nyanga and Cato Manor, and enable us to expand our efforts towards the transformation of our country. Last night in Washington DC, strangers were hi-fiving each other in the streets, and gleefully embracing each other. And I was there, joining in as people shouted “Yes we can! Yes we can!” In his first speech as president elect, Obama spoke about change. Since 2003, IkamvaYouth's learners and volunteers have been showing that yes, we can work hard and help each other to change. IkamvaYouth's innovative by-youth for-youth, cost-effective model has been recognised by the International Youth Foundation, who've selected 20 young social entrepreneurs from over 800 applicants from around the world.
IkamvaYouth wishes all our volunteers that are studying at tertiary institutions all the strength to study and do well during their December exams. IkamvaYouth feels deeply indebted by the amount of time you have dedicated to come out to Tutor learners at Cato Manor in KZN & Khayelitsha in WC. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you as you undergo the exam period. The learners as well are deeply expressing their wishes for all of you and appreciate the time and effort you have taken to come all the way from your institutions to tutor them. Again we want to let you know that without your dedication and commitment IkamvaYouth would have a difficult time in carrying out its duties.
IkamvaYouth KZN was selected as a regional winner for KZN in the education category of the Jet Community Awards. This award comes with a prize of R15 000 which will go a long way towards making our 2008 Summer School a possibility.
More information about the competition and awards are available here. Congratulations to KZN ikamvanites who made this award a possibility! Well done too, to Baholo Monenyane and Thando Mabaso, as well as a large group of our grade 12 learners, who met with the competition judges a few months ago.
