IkamvaYouth Online

IkamvaYouth is piloting an online tutoring and mentoring programme for its top attending grade 12s.

Supplementary Tutoring

What began as a small group of learners and volunteers getting together each Saturday has grown to an average of 100 learners at the Nazeema Isaacs library, 30 learners at the Nyanga library, and 20-30 volunteers.

Career Guidance and Life Skills

Career guidance is essential for the information and support learners need to make well thought-out choices about their post-school lives.

The objectives of IkamvaYouth's career guidance programme are to:

Mentoring Programme

IkamvaYouth’s mentor programme aims to support learners as they explore and understand the opportunities available to them. We have found that regular one-on-one consultation is critical for ensuring that learners prepare for their future.

Many learners are unaware of the requirements for tertiary study; notably that a matric exemption is required for eligibility for university.

IkamvaYouth mentors assist learners by:

  • Ensuring that their subject package and marks fit the requirements for their chosen degrees / diplomas / learnerships
  • Enabling learners to carry out the administration and planning around applying for tertiary education, learnerships, job shadowing opportunities and financial aid
  • Helping them to write good curriculum vitas and letters for applying for scholarships

IkamvaYouth aims to allocate a mentor to each learner to ensure that they receive the individual attention they need. Volunteer tutors can choose to fulfill the responsibilities of mentorship as well, and can specify how many learners they are able to take on.

Computer literacy training

Operation Fikelela (Operation Access) is Ikamvayouth's e-literacy curriculum, and is focused on open source software (Ubuntu operating system; OpenOffice.org and Firefox applications).

Holiday Programme and Extra-mural Activities

During the holidays, IkamvaYouth organises workshops and extra-mural activities, including:

  • Art, drama and music workshops and activities
  • Sport
  • Games (e.g. chess and other board games)
  • Life skills workshops
  • Leadership training and team building
If you are able to help with this programme by running a workshop, or facilitating any extra-mural activities during the holidays (1- 9 April; 24 June - 16 July, 23 September – 1 October), please contact Bulelani.

The Kitchen Club

The kitchen club is a group of people making lunch for ikamva youth every Saturday. Every Saturday we prepare food for all learners and tutors who bring the their own plates.
