The Team

IkamvaYouth is an entirely volunteer-initiated, -managed and -run initiative. Our organisational structure is flat, and democractic decision-making processes are enabled by the following teams of ikamvanites:

(i) Task Teams

Thirteen task teams ensure the functional flow of organisational processes. Ninety percent of task team members are ex-learners who have returned as volunteers.

The task teams are:

  • Supplementary tutoring
  • Career guidance, life skills and mentoring
  • Information and communications technology
  • Finance
  • Marketing and media
  • Volunteer recruitment and orientation
  • Volunteer coordination
  • Learner representatives
  • Administration, monitoring and evaluation
  • Discipline
  • Kitchen Club
  • HIV awareness and voluntary testing
  • Fundraising and proposal writing

(ii) The Management Committee

A representative from each task team sits on the management committee, together with the organisation’s two directors and library representatives.

The management committee is comprised of the people who put the most significant amount of work into ensuring that the organisation meets its mission. The committee is responsible for decision-making and strategy, and provides oversight and coordination of the task teams.

Seventy percent of the management committee comprises IkamvaYouth-grown volunteers (ex-learners), as well as current learners, to ensure that the organisation’s core stakeholders are the focus, and that decisions reflect learner needs.

(iii) Board of directors

IkamvaYouth's board of directors is responsible for the strategic direction of the organisation. It provides support and guidance to the management committee and makes important decisions.

IkamvaYouth's directors are:

  • Denham Trollip
  • Steven Levy
  • Susan Godlonton
  • Theresa Bergsma
  • Makhosi Gogwana
  • Joy Olivier
  • .

    (iii) Volunteer tutors

Just about everyone involved in IkamvaYouth volunteers as a tutor, e-literacy trainer, workshop facilitator or career guidance mentor. Core volunteers are involved in the behind-the-scenes organizational processes in addition to tutoring.

If you would like to be a core volunteer, please contact Susie or Joy.
